How's your crop?

Living in West Texas, especially this time of year, I hear this question being asked a lot. A couple of guys will meet - in the coffee shop, at the bank, at church - almost anywhere and one of them will ask, "how's your crop?" We are getting closer and closer to harvest time. These folks spend a lot of time getting ready... preparing the soil... fertilizing... planting... watering... spraying... chopping down weeds... all of it for this time of year.

Every year there are folks who will be so please with the results... and there will be folks who are terribly disappointed. Some will be able to look back and say it was the result of something they did, or did not, do.

Let me ask you a question... how is your crop? I'm not asking if you are a farmer... or if you have a garden... or even how big the weeds are in your yard. What kind of fruit is your life bearing? What are the results you are getting right now? There is a principle throughout Scripture - you can see it throughout life - that you reap what you sow. Paul says in Galatians 6:7-8 "Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatever you sow, that is what you will reap. If you sow to the flesh, you will from the flesh reap destruction. If you sow to the Spirit, you will from the Spirit reap eternal life."

Think about the implications of that for your life today. As you think about the crop you are harvesting right now... you may be able to look back and say because of this or that, I am now reaping this crop. You cannot change what has been sown in the past... what you can do is this - decide today to plant good seed... to be watered with the life giving stream... to pay attention to the seed you sow in your life... and in the lives of others. Plant good seed and see what kind of crop God will bring.
